Typically, the people that I know fall into one of two groups.  Either they love the holidays or they don’t. Whichever side you’re on, sometimes it can be difficult to really get into the holiday spirit, especially as we get older.  But that doesn’t mean you have to spend the holidays as the Grinch.  In fact, there are a bunch of ways that you get yourself into the holiday spirit, if only for a little while.

For everyone, the holidays hold a different meaning. Where previous holidays that might not have gone so well can creep in, or the chaos that comes with the celebration can take over.

If you’re the one responsible for hosting the holiday gathering, that can mean a slew of other distractions. So many distractions can take away from actually enjoying the holidays and getting into the holiday spirit.

So take a step back, breathe and see what you can do to jumpstart that holiday feeling.

1. Ask for help

If you’re the one in charge of the gathering, pull in family members or close friends (whoever will be attending) and simply ask for help.  Have them bring a dish to pass, or come over the day before and help get things ready.  Think about everything that needs to get done and find some help to do it.

2. Sing Holiday Songs

One of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit, even though it may sound a little silly, is to sing holiday songs. You’ve probably got at least one radio station in your area that starts playing holiday music on Halloween, so you have no excuse not to try. Plus with Spotify, Pandora and Apple Music, well, you get the idea.

3. Start a competition

Who doesn’t like a little friendly competition?  Grab a neighbor or two and see who can put on the best light display. Make it fun and keep it light – we don’t need anyone getting injured or a house going up in flames. The winner makes cookies and shares them. Speaking of cookies…

4. Have a holiday cookie party

Ahhhh holiday cookies are my weakness! Oh my goodness, I could eat them all day.  They are pretty and delicious, and Santa himself can’t get enough (if he exists) so why would I say no?  Get your friends together and each person brings a dozen cookies. Throw them on a table, and eat away.  Make sure to have lots of ice cold milk, warm hot chocolate, and eggnog!

5. Have an ugly sweater party

We all have that ugly holiday sweater hanging in the back of our closets.  So pull it out, dust it off and see who has the ugliest one.  Double points if you combine this with the cookie party.  Don’t worry! No one will see all those extra calories under the ugly sweater! (Plus holiday calories don’t count!)

6. Have a holiday movie marathon

Holiday movies can be the best way to get into the holiday spirit.  They most likely remind you of when you were a child.  Back then the holidays were magical weren’t they?

Here’s some of our favorites!*

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer
A Christmas Story
A Christmas Carol
Frosty the Snowman
Santa Claus
Polar Express

7. Volunteer

The holidays are all about giving aren’t they? If you’re looking to get into the holiday spirit, there’s no better way to do it. If you’re not sure where to start, check out your local shelters and food pantry. Even your local humane society could use a helping hand during the holidays.  If that doesn’t work, take a look at Volunteer Match.

8. Make an event out of putting up the tree and lights

Half the time, putting up the tree and lights can feel like a chore.  So now we make it an event.  We invite immediate family over, have drinks and good food and we all help decorate.  With little kids around it’s fun. With a few drinks it’s really fun.

9. Begin your holiday shopping early

I’m not kidding.  People think I’m crazy but I actually begin my holiday shopping in June or July.  Think about it!  How many times have you been at a store and you come across a really good deal on something someone you know would love?  Yet you just walk away.  Umm, not me.  I snag it and it hangs out in my closet until holiday festivities begin. Plus, it makes me feel totally good knowing I got a really good deal.

So there are a few creative ways to get into the holiday spirit. We definitely hope one works for you!
