Whether you’re going through a difficult situation or facing a challenge, or one of the other endless reasons we all have built up stress in our lives, you’re not alone. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, most Americans suffer from moderate to high stress and 44% have stated that their stress levels have increased over the last five years.

In other words, we need to destress, like now.  

I know I could sure use it. With two toddlers running around, a husband, a house and a really needy cat, you could say my stress levels are up there with the 44%.

So I wanted to share with you some great ways I’ve found to destress. The beauty is, some of these can be done any time, any where.  So you don’t have to try to carve out time in your day to do them. And if you need a little calm in the moment, you can do that too.

 

1. Take deep breaths

By taking some time out to do some breathing exercises, you’re helping your body relax. Plus it can help reduce tension and relieve stress because of the boost of oxygen you’re giving to your system.

 

2. Eat a piece of candy

Keep a small stash of candy in your purse or at your desk (or both) and take a 2 minute time out when you’re feeling stressed to enjoy a piece. By eating a piece of candy or something sweet, it jump starts the production of glucocorticoid, a steroid hormone that is essential for your survival and helps you combat stress.

 

3. Chill out to music

While classical is probably your best choice for relaxation music, try to choose music that is slower paced and is not going to make you excited.  You’re looking for calming music, whatever your genre of choice might be.

 

4. Do some yoga

Yoga is natural stress relief. It relieves tension and can help you soothe some of the physical symptoms of stress.

5. Try handwriting something

Ideally, write an down how you’re feeling in the moment, or reflect on the day in a journal before you go to bed at night.  Doing so can help you reduce the amount of stress and anxiety you carry with you.

 

6. Chew gum

This one might sound a little silly, but chewing gum actually helps your levels of anxiety and stress! Plus, it increases your alertness.  And for many, it helps them get their mind off of things that might be bothering them, at least for a little while.

 

7.  Go for a walk

Take a time out and clear your head by going for a short walk.  Going for a walk will increase your endorphins and reduce your stress levels. Hopefully, you can walk somewhere that is a green space like a park or a courtyard.
